We Don’t Have a System
The United States spends four trillion dollars a year on healthcare, yet we are ranked last on basic healthcare measures among industrialized nations. Dr. Weed articulated that decision errors were the root cause of this tremendous waste and harm to people. He shined a spotlight on the role of cognitive mistakes and the over-reliance on human memory long before we had reliable computers and smartphones. He conceptualized the need for augmented intelligence before anyone realized we needed it. A tireless advocate for putting patients first, Larry led a generation and continues to inspire us to do better. Watch this three-minute video.
Thanks to Noah Craft, MD, PhD, for sending a film crew to Vermont and New Orleans and sharing the footage with us, thereby helping us preserve these ideas and Larry’s legacy.
Clear and Sound Clinical Thinking
In 1971 Dr. Larry Weed articulated how well-organized problem lists and medical records are essential to clear and sound clinical thinking in this Grand Rounds presentation at Emory University. Now, nearly 50 years after publication of Dr. Weed’s seminal “Medical Records that Guide and Teach”, we believe his message is more relevant than ever. If electronic medical records are to support accurate clinical decision-making, then they must have a standard structure and format based on many of the principles that Larry Weed articulated so many years ago. We encourage today’s CMIOs, clinicians, residents, and medical students to watch this video.
Dr. Weed was a tremendous influence on VisualDx CEO, Dr. Art Papier, and his career in medicine. Dr. Papier reflected on that in this touching tribute shortly after Dr. Weed’s passing in 2017.
