A 38-year-old woman is experiencing abdominal pain, diarrhea and a fever. Let’s diagnose.

A 38-year-old woman presented to the doctor with complaints of abdominal pain and cramping; bloody and watery diarrhea; and fever that developed within the last week. She noted that she first experienced these symptoms a few days prior, noticed improvement, and then symptoms began to worsen. The patient had no recent travel history and was otherwise healthy. She worked at a summertime childcare center and several attendees and employees had reported similar symptoms. On examination, the patient had a fever of 37.9°C (103°F) and lower abdominal tenderness was palpated.
