FNP Student Figures Out Sister’s Chronic Skin Condition with VisualDx

S. Ferguson, a family nurse practitioner student at the University of Iowa, correctly diagnosed her sister who had been experiencing symptoms for 10 years by creating a differential in VisualDx.

“My sister, in her mid-twenties, was experiencing erythemic, itchy, and mildly inflamed hands after exposure to the cold. She experienced this from fall to early spring after her hands had been exposed to cold air for more than 5 minutes. She described the sensation to follow exposure and re-warming as “itchy, stiff, and red splotches.” These symptoms did not extend above the wrist. These symptoms would resolve over the course of 1-2 hours. She had been noticed this for at least the past 10 years but had never addressed it. After utilizing VisualDx, it appeared she was experiencing cold urticaria. She tested this theory via ice therapy and confirmed this diagnosis!”
