What is your job title? Medical Research Librarian III
What does a typical workday look like for you? I start the day checking my notes and Jira to see what task I left off on the night before. Typically, I might be doing research, meaning I am identifying relevant evidence in the medical literature (textbooks, journals, reputable websites) on our diagnostic topics. I use this evidence to code, and to also prove, the relationships in kmax that create the diagnosis differential builder. Every week I also review the new research my librarian colleagues created on both kmax and our test servers.
After this type of ongoing research is done, I work on supporting our future projects. Right now, I am discovering what new orthopedic exam tests are important and relevant enough to users to be added into our database. Otherwise, you might catch me working on medical histories, answering questions from the Imaging team, or working on the library process documents with Veronica, VisualDx’s senior quality compliance writer.
What’s a great book you’ve recently read? I recently read Tara Westover’s memoir “Educated.” Tara recounts growing up in a Mormon survivalist home in rural Idaho, with little interaction with public schooling or medical care. What I found most impactful about the memoir was Tara’s growing ability to trust herself against the advice of her family. Warning: it’s a fairly intense read.
Do you have any pets? I have two cats, Lucius and Persephone, who are at the same time terrible and wonderful. Lucius has a new neighborhood enemy, a black and white cat with a collar who comes around at dusk to taunt him.
If you could donate a million dollars to any charity, what cause would you choose? Plumpy’Nut®! Via UNICEF
What sport would you compete in if you were in the Olympics? I’m pretty good at treading water.
What is in your Netflix queue? I am awaiting the second season of “The Great” – a zany reimagining of Catherine the Great’s rise.
What was your first job? I worked as an ice cream scoop at Lil’ River Fudge Company in Alexandria Bay, NY.
What is your favorite way to unwind? I like to lie down completely flat on a nice rug. It feels very good for my back.
What’s something you want to do in the next year that you’ve never done before? I’d like to plant a flower garden with some rock features in the front and side yards and start a compost heap in the back.
