Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy is an uncommon disorder that presents with digital clubbing of feet and hands, periostitis of the long tubular bones, and arthritis or synovial effusions of large joints.

Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy may be primary (inherited or idiopathic) or secondary (more common). Secondary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, also known as Pierre-Marie Bamberger syndrome, is usually associated with heart, liver, intestinal, or lung disease, with lung cancer being the most frequent association. In secondary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, periosteal bone formation occurs at the fingers, toes, and terminal epiphyses of tubular bones of the arms and legs. Pain and inflammation of long bones and joints are common symptoms and may be more severe and debilitating.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories may help relieve symptomatic pain. The condition typically resolves upon treatment of the underlying condition (tumor, anomaly, infection).
