Synopsis

Nicotine stomatitis (also known as smoker's palate) is a mucosal change of the palate most commonly associated with pipe smoking. It is less commonly associated with the use of cigars, cigarettes, and electronic cigarettes. Rarely, cases have been associated with marijuana smoking. It seems to develop in response to the heat rather than the chemicals in the smoke. Similar palatal mucosal changes have been reported in patients who drink very hot beverages frequently.

Nicotine stomatitis does not have a premalignant potential, and lesions may be present from weeks to years. Nicotine stomatitis is found more commonly in men older than 45 years of age with the additional risk factor of smoking.
