A defect in the pars interarticularis of the neural arch that connects the superior and inferior articular facets, leading to back pain and spondylolisthesis. Thought to be secondary to both hereditary factors such as spina bifida occulta and repeated microtrauma to the back. 95% of spondylolysis occurs at the L5 level.
